The Culvert 2008 - Wladyslaw Mirecki

Early Autumn, Chappel Viaduct, Watercolour, 2007, 125 x 150 cms

This epic size watercolour brings together elements particular to Mirecki’s compositions.    The telegraph pole centrally placed, tarmac, road markings, an old gate and fencing with of course ‘his’ Chappel Viaduct; thirteen of its thirty two arches in the middle distance flanked by trees, all filling the page.  Detailed nettles, grasses and brambles – more favourite motifs, and the sweep of the main road equally divide the foreground in two parts.

Since Władysław arrived in Chappel in 1985 he, as so many do, took to heart the huge Viaduct, so ominous is this small valley.  It is typical of Mirecki that for such a key painting he should use a scene that is literally outside his door, a path walked every day of his life.

Being his first acceptance into the Lynn Painter-Stainers exhibition in London 2007 this painting has been widely exhibited and published.
